SoMa Before SFMOMA

The Lost World, the 6th and last map of the year. By now it has become an obsession. Collecting map broadsheets and attending the embarrage of events this year around Rebecca Solnit’s Infinite City series. But this is one you will not want to miss.

An amazing assembly of panelists, including Ruth Askevold, cartographic specialist at the San Francisco Estuary Institute, writer Chris Carlsson, photographer Ira Nowinski, and many, many others, including Rebecca Solnit herself, will be in attendance. The theme is South of Market’s many faces and phases. From blue collar to punk rocker, SRO haven to heart of the Filipino community – SoMa went through many steps before being home to museum institutions and convention centers.

The Lost World map focuses on the area bound by Market, Second, Fourth and Folsom streets and paints a panorama of what the neighborhood looked like circa 1960.
