Pearls Over Shanghai

It’s sheer glam and gender-bending, sex-loving, drug-loving high drag. It’s Pearls Over Shanghai! Originally produced as a Nocturnal Dream Show and performed at midnight at the old Palace Theatre in Chinatown, “Pearls Over Shanghai” was the fabled and fabulous Cockettes’ first showpiece; a psychedelic musical inspired by sinsoaked Old Shanghai and Busby Berkeley movie musicals from Hollywood’s Golden Age.

Now it’s enjoying a new life in the Hypnodrome Theater in a production by the Thrillpeddlers, who have been performing their unique brand of horror and fetish theatre in San Francisco since 1991.

With sold out nightly performances, Pearls Over Shanghai is in an extended run through April 2011. Give your loved one the perfect holiday gift and don’t miss the chance to see the extravagant show that everyone’s been talking about. And keep your eyes peeled because, come Spring, the Thrillpeddlers will be bringing to the stage yet another Cockettes’ classic. Vice Palace: The Last Cockettes Musical is based on Edgar Allen Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death (or more precisely the hallucinatory film version starring Vincent Price).
